Magic March: Writing Prompts for Fantasy Writers

By: Emrald Sethna

Hello, writers! Let us take a journey into the fantasy genre. There you can find creatures familiar and unknown, magic that twists and influences the world, hidden realms, even supernatural powers or objects that can wreak havoc on our world. There are endless possibilities when it comes to the world of fantasy.

Here are some writing prompts to help you explore this exciting genre:

- Write a short story about an otherworldly creature your protagonist encounters.

- Create a poem that alludes to a superpower you wish to have.

- Construct a scene where a character accidentally discovers a hidden world.

- Imagine you are a witch or wizard with unlimited power and write about how your life would have played out differently.

- Develop a screenplay or short story where two mythical creatures befriend one another.

- Within a poem, create a spell to benefit the people around you.

- Write a story about a powerful enchantment gone wrong.

Welcome to Magic March!

By: The Steps to Getting Published Team

Welcome to Magic March!

This month at The Steps to Getting Published, we'll take a look at some literary agents and publishers in the fantasy genre and provide you with writing prompts geared toward fantasy writing. In writing fantasy, there are many elements to consider, including world-building, vast colorful settings, and even fantasy creatures. This is where a writer's imagination can go wild, so we hope this is a genre you’ll attempt at least once in your writing career. It's always fun to see how our characters interact with fantastical creatures and how the magical world our characters are thrust into influences their behavior and their morals.

Below, please find current publishers representing the fantasy genre (more lists to come, including literary agents). Remember, too, that word counts in this genre can go a bit higher, and publishers will allow this for world-building. Please let us know if you have any questions on that, or anything else. We hope March finds you writing magical stories and getting them out into the world!
